"Myself and my advisor Carl Legleiter are from the University of Wyoming and have been using the S5 on terrestrial rivers for a number of years. Our positive experience with the instrument on terrestrial rivers gave us confidence that the instrument would be a valuable tool for making measurements on rivers on the Greenland ice sheet. While we faced a number of challenges deploying the instrument and collecting quality data in such an extreme environment we were able to collect measurements that would be impossible by any other means. The project PI (Larry Smith) was so impressed with the instrument’s performance that he recently purchased one for his own lab. The key to successfully collecting measurements with the S5 on these streams was a lightweight cableway system designed for us by a company named StreamCraft. We had previously worked with this company to create a mounting system to deploy the S5 from a whitewater kayak that greatly increased the river conditions in which we were able to use the ADCP. The lightweight cableway allowed us to setup cross sections in areas where the only way across the river was by helicopter."
